I can be as small as a pin head or almost as large as the coin itself, and is easy to identify since it looks like metal leaf when attached and grainy if . Definition: Lamination errors are planchet errors in which the surface of a coin cracks and flakes. It is generally believed that lamination errors are caused by contaminants in the alloy that cause the metal to separate along the horizontal plane. Lamination errors can develop before or after the strike. 25/7/ · Not much unfortunately. As with all varieties, because it is on the die there were many thousands struck. There may be a small premium to collectors of die cracks, laminations etc. but as with the varieties they are so common your coin would have to grade very high to generate much interest, which your coin doesn’t have.

A coin with an off center strike is created when the coin blank is struck outside the collar that holds it in place when the die strikes. The coin is incorrectly centered with part of the design missing, thus revealing a certain amount of blank planchet space. Off center strike error coins can vary in value based on how far off center they are struck, and it what orientation.
For instance, coins with missing dates or digits are not as desirable as those with the full date showing. Clipped Planchets are coins that are incomplete due to improperly cut blanks. Values of clipped planchets may vary depending on the coin, the type of clip and the percentage missing from what would be a normal coin.
Clips are categorized as curved, straight, ragged, incomplete and elliptical. Generally the more severe and interesting the error the more valuable the coin. These occur when a portion of the die breaks away as the consequence of a progressive crack. The repeated stress of striking planchets causes dies to wear down and, in some instances, crack.
As these cracks deepen and reach from one edge of the die face to another, that portion defined by the crack may actually fall away from the die. The planchet metal then fills this void, and the resulting coins shows a featureless blob where the die broke.

The value of the coin can be influenced by its quality or condition. Imperfections that make the coin lose its eye appeal cause the decrease in coin value. However, there may be coin imperfections that can increase the price of your collectible coin. These are coin errors. Error coins are also called striking errors or mint errors. These flaws occur in the mint during the process of making the coins — from preparing the metal for the planchets or coin blanks to striking the design using the metal stamping tool called coin dies.
Minting defects are very rare especially with the technology of modern coinage. Coins with flaws too, are not supposed to be issued for circulation and are instead recycled. Because of this, error coins are very valuable to coin collectors. In fact, coin error collectables are generally more expensive than other collectible coins without the mint mistakes.
There are also numismatic organizations that focus on error coin collecting. Off-center strikes are the most known mint error coins in numismatics. Off-centering occurs when the coin blank does not land properly on the collar a metal ring between the upper and lower die of the coin chamber. It holds the coin blank or planchet in place when the design is pressed on the coin.

Lamination on Clad Coins. Definition: A lamination error occurs when metal flakes off the surface of a coin or planchet. It is generally believed that the flaking, peeling, and cracking is due to impurities in the alloy which causes metal to separate along horizontal planes of weakness.
An interesting but not particularly scarce type of coin error is the lamination flaw or planchet flaw error. It is also sometimes known as a peel error. A lamination or planchet flaw or peel coin error occurs when there is some sort of impurity in the metal of the coin planchet just below the outside layer of the coin.
This impurity stops all of the metal in the coin bonding together correctly. Because the layer of impurity in coin is just below the surface the thin layer of metal between it and the surface can become become either partially or totally detached from the rest of the coin. I am not sure if there is an official distinction between a lamination or planchet flaw error and a peel error, but I like to define them as follows:.
These errors appear to have very slight flaws or cracks in the surface of the coin that generally are quite long. Peel Coin Error : I like to think of this error as one where the thin layer on top of the impurity metal from the coin has completely or totally detached from the surface of the coin. In the above image you can see a peel on the reverse of the coin that is almost completely detached from the coin.
On a closing note, the lamination flaw coin error or peel coin error is closely related to the split planchet coin error. Both are caused my impurities or flaws of the coin planchet and result in all or part of the metal of the planchet detaching from the rest of the planchet.
