This is the second edition of Wil van der Aalst’s seminal book on process mining, which now discusses the field also in the broader context of data science and big data approaches. It includes several additions and updates, e.g. on inductive mining techniques, the notion of alignments, a considerably expanded section on software tools and a Author: Wil Van Der Aalst. Wil van der Aalst delivers the first book on process mining. It aims to be self-contained while covering the entire process mining spectrum from process discovery to operational support. In Part I, the author provides the basics of business process modeling and data mining necessary to understand the remainder of the book.

Despite the omnipresence of such data, most organizations diagnose problems based on fiction rather than facts. Process mining is an emerging discipline based on process model-driven approaches and data mining. It not only allows organizations to fully benefit from the information stored in their systems, but it can also be used to check the conformance of processes, detect bottlenecks, and predict execution problems.

Wil van der Aalst delivers the first book on process mining. It aims to be self-contained while covering the entire process mining spectrum from process discovery to operational support. In Part I, the author provides the basics of business process modeling and data mining necessary to understand the remainder of the book.

Part II focuses on process discovery as the most important process mining task. Part III moves beyond discovering the control flow of processes and highlights conformance checking, and organizational and time perspectives. Part IV guides the reader in successfully applying process mining in practice, including an introduction to the widely used open-source tool ProM. Finally, Part V takes a step back, reflecting on the material presented and the key open challenges.

He also has a part-time appointment in the BPM group of Queensland University of Technology QUT , Australia. His research and teaching interests include information systems, workflow management, Petri nets, process mining, specification languages, and simulation.

In these increasingly challenging times, businesses – now more than ever – need to implement change, not just in terms of processes, but in how these processes are observed. Process Mining has the power to create that much needed visibility on where performance problems exist, which is enabling many more businesses to implement key optimisation strategies and adapt to the global disruption.

Ahead of the PEX Process Mining Summit we spoke to Prof. Wil van der Aalst, Chair of Data and Process Science, RWTH, Aachen University, to discuss successfully applying process mining in action. In our exclusive interview, Wil also reveals the essential precursors an organisation must implement before undertaking their process mining journey and looks at the links between process mining and robotic process automation.

Wil, known as ‚the Godfather of Process Mining‘, will be presenting the keynote speech at this year’s event, entitled ‚The Power of Process Mining to Remove Organisational Friction‘. Process mining techniques including process discovery, conformance checking, and process enhancement provide extensive knowledge about processes. Discovering running processes and deviations as well as detecting performance problems and bottlenecks are well-supported by process mining tools. The improvement in a process requires insights into the future states of the process w. In this paper, we present a new tool that enables process owners to extract all the process aspects from their historical event data automatically, change these aspects, and re-run the process automatically using an interface.

The combination of process mining and simulation techniques provides new evidence-driven ways to explore „what-if“ questions. Therefore, assessing the effects of changes in process improvement is also possible. Our Python-based web-application provides a complete interactive platform to improve the flow of activities, i. These parameters are derived directly from an event log without user-background knowledge.

In , I started to actively work on process mining, because I noted that the process models used for simulation studies and workflow implementations often turned out to be very different from the actual processes. Therefore, it seemed to be good to start from event data rather than hand-made models. Moreover, the problem of learning end-to-end processes from example behavior seemed very interesting from a scientific point of view.

This keynote for the first international process mining conference ICPM reflects on the developments of the field over the last two decades. Process mining has been applied in thousands of organizations, there are dozens for software vendors offering process mining tools, and it has become a standard tool for auditing, management, process improvement, and consultancy. Despite the success and value of process mining, many of the original problems have not been solved satisfactorily from a scientific point of view.

Discovered process models tend to be underfitting and there is no consensus on how to measure this precision. The filtered directly-follows graph is surprisingly effective, but does not capture concurrency well. Finding the root cause of compliance and performance problems is still not supported well. All of these problems have been raised over 15 years ago, but remain open, despite the remarkable progress in process mining.
